2018 sees the return of the Great Cheverell Soap Box Derby
The Great Cheverell Soap Box Derby was originally started in the 80's by Gordon Straker, Bryan Coupe & Bill Leedham. Back then, it was much smaller event and simply ran downhill along the high street. During the 90's the race event moved to The Owl at Little Cheverell, organised by Mike Hardham. The race in it's current form was re-started in 2006 with the help of Gill and Sara Currie at The Bell Inn.
The race starts and finishes at the Bell and takes place around a circular course of approximately 1km. The beginning runs downhill and around a fast right-hander. An uphill section follows with a compulsory drink stop. It then continues uphill with a longer but easier gradient. There is then a nice level section at the top of the village and finally a downhill run, through the first chicane. There is a second chicane and a second compulsory drink stop before the final downhill run to the finish line.
There are currently four categories for teams; Family, Under 14, 14-17 and Adult. There is a trophy for each winning team in their category & the Bryan Coupe Cup goes to the fastest Great Cheverell team. In 2018 we are hoping to bring in a new F1 category for teams with an engineering bent, so keep checking on this website for news. The race is timed but you could always follow in the footsteps of the Trotters Independent Strakers, and simply take a leisurely drive around the course stopping to sample the local beer. These local legends famously have the record for the longest time to complete the course, a leisurely 23 mins! Although not a requirement, we do encourage fancy-dress.
There are two compulsory drink stops on the course. The drink stops serve two important purposes; firstly, they keep the team hydrated for the ever-so-gently-inclining back straight and secondly, they provide a useful break in the final downhill run to the finish line.
Only a short dash from the second drink stop is the finish line. You will have huge support from the spectators, who are only too pleased to help you cool off with a well aimed water-pistol. All of the competitors will recieve a Soap Box Derby Medal and the category winners will be presented a trophy. The trophies remain on display in The Bell but your efforts are rewarded with a permanent badge recording the winning team name and year in that category. That's it.
