Great Cheverell Soap Box Derby

The Great Cheverell Shindig 2026

This year we are having The Shindig on Sunday 30th August, 2pm at The Pavilion.

The Soapbox Race

Since the re-introduction of the Great Cheverell Soapbox Derby event back in 2006, we have run the race every other year until 2022. You can have a look back at the 2022 Race Results and other information in the News section.

Unfortunately, post COVID, we have not been able to secure cost-effective insurance to run the event and so, in 2023 we had to cancel the event.

The Soapbox Derby committee have also organised other events, notably the Soapbox Derby Ball held in the Autumn of the years that the race event was not taking place. Soapbox Santa was started in 2022. Santa rides in his sleigh around the village, stopping off to sing carols along the way. The Village Feast, Party At The Pavilion, Queens Birthday and 80th VE Day celebrations have also helped to bring the village of Great Cheverell together.

Over the years since 2006, the Great Cheverell Soapbox Derby Committee has raised over £135,000 for local village amenities and charities, and also a chosen charity each year, including Dorothy House, Pancreatic Cancer, British Heart Foundation, Breast Cancer Research, Myeloma UK, Wilts Air Ambulance, South West Ambulance Service, Devizes Food Bank, Holy Trinity CE Primary Academy, St. Peters Church, The Village Hall and The Pavilion.

The Great Cheverell Shindig

After we were unable to run the race in 2023, due to insurance funding issues, we deciced to try something slightly different. We had run Parties At The Pavilion previously and, as a variation on that theme, the Great Cheverell Soapbox Derby Shindig was born. This years Shindig starts at 2pm on Sunday 30th August at The Pavilion.

The Shindig brings togther local crafts, vintage and agricultural vehicles, music and food for an entertaining afternoon and evening for all the family. We want to get everyone together, to have fun and to raise money for local amenities and charities.

Unfortunately, there is no Soapbox Race at The Shindig, but who knows, one day…

Pete Andrew

The driving force behind all the The Soapbox Committee has done, was Peter Andrew. He is greatly missed and this years Shindig is in memoriam to him.
